Parent Information Regarding Adaptive Learning

The district staff are creating opportunities for students to continue to engage in learning from home during school closures. We do not expect to replace the in-person school experience or to match instruction hour for hour. Instead we want to extend an opportunity for our students to stay connected, create some normalcy, stay on a path to meet the state standards, and combat isolation. This time at home might feel like a vacation for your child, but we advise you to remind them that their education still comes first. Obligations like class assignments, assessments, and grades aren’t going away just because classes are being held at home.
 
Many of us are at home with our families and we understand learning has to be flexible or it won’t be possible. Log in when you can or complete hard copy/jump drive assignments as often as you can, but note that our daily classroom lessons based on our priority learning standards are our focus and the choice boards are there to help support extended learning.
 
You can find the daily assignments on the each of the grade level pages. The choice boards allow students options for accessing and completing activities in the different content areas. The daily assignments are expected to be completed while the choice boards offer extensions to learning. Look for guidance from your teachers on these options.
 
Here are some tips to help parents as we transition into this new mode of learning:
It will be helpful to establish a schedule and routine that works for your family. There is no requirement that your students spend a certain number of minutes on a task. Instead, students will be responsible for completing the assignments. In other words, it’s the product that matters, not the amount of time it takes to complete the task. It might help to…
  • Set regular hours for learning. If possible, align these hours with the hours that your children are most attentive. These may be different for different children, respective of age and workload.
  • Write down a schedule for each child (or if appropriate, have your child create a schedule) with built-in breaks for snacks, outdoor movement/ exercise and playtime. PE teachers will be providing lessons and activities students can do at home. Check off items as completed -- children love the sense of accomplishment! Younger children might also be motivated by short goals, i.e. “complete two activities from your teacher and then we’ll play a family game.” Let your kids recharge and
  • Maintain regular sleep routines and wake times.
 
Part of your routine could be to start and finish the day with a check in about your child(ren)’s learning for the day.
  • Look at grade level assignment calendars together to review anything that is due.
  • Check in with their online learning platforms to find any updates for the day, or look at their hard-copy/jump drive materials for the next assignments.
  • Review if any of their teachers have office hours that day and write questions down together that may need to be answered. If you do not have an Internet connection, take advantage of the other modes of communication provided by your teachers.
  • Finally have a discussion and ask
    • What are you learning today?
    • What are the learning goals?
    • How will you spend your time? (as mentioned above, consider setting a schedule that can be easily followed by your children)
    • What resources do you require?
    • How can I help?
 
Provide a learning space/quiet zone in your home for learning that is free of distractions. It’s best to not have toys, TVs, or phones (unless the phone is the device being used to access the online resources) in the learning space. Have resources and materials available in the space that your child(ren) will need to complete their tasks.
 
Try to ensure that students take part in any collaborative or all-class learning opportunities as maintaining some social interaction is vitally important. If the teacher provides any open discussion or open “office hour” time, please try to take advantage of it at times to allow for social interactions. It’s also a good idea to monitor social media use during extended school closures.

Please remind your child(ren) about the responsible use of technology.
  • Use respectful behavior and language.
  • Stick to appropriate topic discussions.
  • Send only appropriate video transmissions.
  • Use only appropriate icon, emoji, and avatar submissions.
  • Wear school appropriate clothing if attending meetings via video or live.
  • Be honest and use academic integrity by not plagiarizing or copying others’ work
  • Not falsify information about oneself or impersonate others online.
  • Comply with all district and school policies about the use of technology and the Internet.
  • If using a district device, comply with all terms of the use agreement and all district and school policies.

Check in with other parents. Everyone is going through a shift in routines and encountering challenges along the way. Steal and share ideas about what’s working and what has been effective. Try to support each other and learn from each other. Reach out to school support personnel through your teachers or principal for additional support or access to resources.
 
Finally, it’s important during this time to enjoy being with your children, to schedule in time for fun, and to take care of each other physically and emotionally. The health and safety of our families is the top priority in these uncertain times. Students will be considered participating and engaged if they are taking part in activities and completing assignments. If you want to schedule some family time or family activity, just let your teachers know and then have children engage in the learning after your family time is complete. Be kind to yourself, your kids, and school district staff as we all adjust to these new circumstances.
