Partners in School Safety

CCSD1 and Douglas Police Department Partner on School Safety
Bearcat Update

Recent school shootings have heightened the focus on the issue of school safety. There is nothing more important than keeping our students and staff members safe, and the Douglas Police Department and Converse County School District #1 want to assure our parents and community that we are working together to ensure solid safety measures are in place across the school district.

The district has a comprehensive crisis and safety plan that is regularly monitored and updated by a committee involving school district and community partners including the police department. Converse County sheriff's deputies provide coverage for all rural schools. The district has enhanced the safety protocols in response to crisis situations and has also taken measures to make the school facilities more safe.

Some things the district and PD have done include writing a grant to add an additional School Resource Officer, holding joint trainings and drills, conducting school building walk-throughs and safety assessments, and writing a grant for radios that allow all schools, law enforcement, and bus drivers to communicate in a crisis.

Both the school district and police department value the close partnership and collaborative efforts to keep our schools as safe as possible.
